Em 1960, uma pequena nota no "Correio da Manhã" informa que a célebre pintora brasileira Djanira havia comprado e estava reformando um casarão em Paraty, para onde deveria se mudar. Após terminadas as melhorias no prédio, ela instalou seu ateliê no local e passou a produzir. A influência da cidade na produção naif da artista é quase instantânea, como o mostra o quadro "Folia do Divino" (1960), que retrata a tradicional Festa do Divino na cidade.

A paixão pela vida simples de Paraty era tanta que ela acabou comprando um sítio no Corumbê, distante do Centro Histórico, onde passou a morar. No entanto, a relação da pintora com a cidade acaba mal. Em 1967, após saírem da praia do Pontal, Djanira e seus amigos desafiaram a ordem de um juiz local que proibia trajes de banho no bairro histórico. Ao ser abordada por policiais em um restaurante, a pintora discutiu, acertou um deles com sua bengala e foi embora para o sítio. Insatisfeitos, os soldados da Ditadura Militar cercaram o imóvel no dia seguinte e, após horas de impasse, executaram os cães da artista como retaliação. O ato foi a gota d'água para ela, que deixou de frequentar Paraty.

In 1960, a small note in the "Correio da Manhã" (Morning Mail) informed that the famous Brazilian painter Djanira had bought and was renovating a big house in Paraty, where she was to move. After the improvements to the building were completed, she set up her studio there and began to produce. The influence of the city in the artist's naif production is almost instantaneous, as shown in the painting "Folia do Divino" (1960), which depicts the traditional Festa do Divino (Holy Ghost Festival) in the city.

Her passion for the simple life in Paraty was such that she ended up buying a farm in Corumbê, far from the Historical Center, where she moved to. However, the painter's relationship with the town ended badly. In 1967, after leaving Pontal beach, Djanira and her friends defied the order of a local judge that forbade bathing suits in the historic district. When approached by policemen in a restaurant, the painter argued, hit one of them with her walking stick and left. Dissatisfied, the soldiers of the Military Dictatorship surrounded the property the next day and, after hours of standoff, executed the artist's dogs in retaliation. This act was the last straw for her, and she stopped visiting Paraty.
